Matters concerning the University Temperance Hall [manuscript], [1895?]

In the hand of F. P. Dunnington. Consists of extracts made by "Mr. Wm. Wertenbaker" from official University of Virginia records regarding the construction of Temperance Hall, 1852-1856. Followed by recommendations by Dunnington to allow the University Y.M.C.A. to use Temperance Hall since the Temperance Society "though repeatedly revived by special exertion, has, through a period of 50 years, proved less and less efficient in restraining dissipation." Dunnington comments that scholarships awarded for debates have served only to defray the expenses of students. He notes that many famous lecturers have spoken at the Hall over the years, including "Sen. Colquit, Rev. Dr. Theo.Cuyler, R. J. McBryde, M. Babcock and Washington Gladden." These lectures have been well attended, but not by University students. Concludes with a statement of the finances of the Temperance Society.
